The smell reached Logan long before the sound did.
It was an overwhelming, stomach-churning cocktail of burnt copper, charred flesh, hot ozone, diesel fuel, and the sweet, synthetic tang of weaponized neurotoxin. To an ordinary human, the air in the Financial District was just thick with the heavy soot of an urban fire, smelling faintly of burning insulation and trash. To Logan's hyper-acute senses, it was a physical blow to the head—a suffocating wave of sensory trauma that set every violent instinct honed over a century of blood, mud, and iron on absolute fire. Every breath he took tasted of metal and mortality, coating his tongue with the greasy, chemical residue of destruction.
Logan crouched in the shattered window frame of a twelve-floor office building overlooking Montgomery Street, his heavy combat boots digging into the jagged shards of reinforced glass lining the sill. Below him, the heart of San Francisco’s economic sector was a post-apocalyptic war zone. The midday sun was completely obscured by thick, rolling plumes of black smoke that turned the afternoon sky into a bruised, sulfurous orange.
Two gene-boosted Prime Sentinels—sleeker, taller, and far more agile than the archaic mechanical hulks of the past—were marching methodically through the smoke. Their composite-hull armor absorbed the ambient glare of burning sedans, and their jointed limbs moved with a fluid, terrifying grace that no pure machine could mimic. Their palm-mounted plasma cannons fired in rhythmic, deafening succession, vaporizing civilian vehicles into molten scrap and blasting high-rise concrete facades into clouds of blinding, flying dust. They weren't just clearing the streets; they were liquidating everything with a heartbeat.
"Logan! Do you copy?!" Cyclops’ voice crackled through his ear-comm, heavily distorted by severe electromagnetic pulse interference and the distant roar of plasma explosions. "We need you down at the subway ventilation junction on 4th Street immediately! Hodge’s heavy assault teams have deployed a neurotoxin canister in the central air ducts! If that payload hits the lower transit platforms--"
"I hear ya, Cyke," Logan growled, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that sounded like grindstones scraping together. He wiped a mixture of sweat, soot, and dried blood from his forehead with the back of his heavy leather glove, squinting through the ambient heat haze. "I'm moving as fast as I can. But they've deployed heavy armor up top. These new Sentinels aren't scanning for physical shapes or radio signals. They're tracking brainwaves and active X-Gene heat signatures. The second I step into the open, every barrel in this grid locks onto me."
Before Scott could respond, the comm-line dissolved into a shrieking mess of static. A second later, a massive, solid steel fist smashed through the six-inch reinforced concrete wall directly behind Logan.
The explosion of drywall, steel rebar, and pulverized brick blew outward into the empty air. Logan rolled forward by pure, ingrained instinct, diving through the shattered glass window onto the exterior fire escape as the entire office wall collapsed in a roaring cascade. He hit the rusted iron landing, spun on his heel, and looked up into the dust cloud billowing from the gaping hole in the building.
Emerging from the fog of debris was Cain Marko—the Juggernaut. But Marko wasn't acting of his own free will. He didn't possess the wild, arrogant swagger that usually accompanied his earth-shaking step. His exposed skin was pale, crossed with black, decaying veins, and his eyes glowed with an unnatural, milky violet light that pulsed in time with a harsh electronic hum. Four thick, cybernetic control spikes had been driven deep through his heavy collar armor, biting directly into the base of his skull and spinal column. Small crimson rivers of blood ran down his back, instantly cauterized by the heat of the neural overrides.
"Marko!" Logan barked, bouncing up onto his feet and flexing his broad hands as six adamantium claws snapped free from his knuckles with a sharp, lethal snikt-snikt. "Snap out of it, big guy!"
Juggernaut didn't answer. He didn't even register Logan's voice. He let out a mindless, animalistic roar—a sound so deep and resonant that it shattered the remaining windows for two blocks in every direction and rattled the teeth in Logan's jaw. Marko charged forward, stepping straight off the building's structural edge onto the iron fire escape. The metal structure buckled and snapped under his three-ton weight like dry twigs, sending both of them plunging into the narrow alleyway below.
They fell through three flights of steel platforms before crashing onto the roof of an armored transport van parked in the alley. The vehicle collapsed under the force of the impact, its frame shearing in half with a horrific screech of metal.
Logan rolled off the wreckage, but Marko was already moving. He moved with terrifying speed for a man of his size—a relentless mountain of unstoppable, muscle-bound momentum that tore through steel support beams, parked cars, and brick alley walls as if they were made of wet paper.
Logan didn't attempt to stand his ground and absorb a head-on charge. He waited until the last possible microsecond, then leapt straight over Marko's massive, domed helmet. As he flew over the brute's shoulders, Logan drove his claws deep into the juggernaut's heavy shoulder armor, using the grip to swing himself around onto the brute's broad back.
"Get off me!" Marko bellowed, the neural spikes forcing a slurred, robotic cadence into his booming voice.
The sheer, physics-defying momentum of Marko's charge carried both of them straight through the exterior wall of an adjacent corporate bank building. They crashed through reinforced marble pillars, sliding floorboards, and glass partitions, sending a multi-story structural column collapsing behind them. They plunged four stories down through the crumbling interior of the bank lobby in a blinding cascade of shattered tile, plaster, and twisted structural steel.
They hit the basement marble floor with a deafening crash that shook the building's foundation. The sheer kinetic shock blew Logan off Marko's back, throwing him fifteen feet across the room. Logan slammed hard against a solid marble support column, the force of the impact fracturing three ribs, puncturing a lung, and completely dislocating his left shoulder.
He lay on the cold, debris-strewn floor for a fraction of a second, gasping for air as his mouth filled with the metallic taste of blood. His accelerated healing factor went to work instantly—knitting torn muscle, re-aligning cracked bone, and burning away the excruciating pain with a hot, sickening throb that made his vision swim with white light. His left shoulder popped back into its socket with a wet, nauseating click.
"Gah... damn mind-control rig," Logan spat, wiping a stream of dark blood from his chin as he scrambled back up to his feet.
Marko was already turning, his milky violet eyes fixed on Logan. He swung a fist the size of an engine block directly at Logan's head. Logan ducked beneath the devastating blow, the raw wind generated by the punch ripping the heavy leather of his jacket and leaving his ears ringing from the sheer air displacement. The blow continued past him, striking the marble column behind Logan and detonating it into a cloud of fine white dust.
Closing the distance, Logan lunged forward, jumping off the falling masonry and driving all three of his right-hand claws deep into the central cybernetic control node mounted at the base of Marko's neck.
Bright green sparks showered through the dim, dust-choked air as adamantium met military-grade circuitry. High-voltage feedback arced through the metal, blue electricity crackling across Marko's neck and arms. The brute bellowed in agonizing pain, thrashing violently like a wounded animal. He reached back with one massive hand, grabbed Logan by the front of his jacket, and threw him with terrifying force straight across the lobby.
Logan slammed into a bank of closed, heavy steel elevator doors, leaving a deep, body-shaped dent in the metal before sliding down to the blood-stained tile floor.
He spat another mouthful of dark blood, his amber eyes narrowing through the thick dust cloud settling over the room. Even through the deafening noise of the collapsing building above and the ringing in his ears, his hyper-acute senses were locked onto the ground beneath him. Through the cracks in the marble floor, he could smell the sewer vents below. He could smell the Purifier strike team creeping through the lower maintenance tunnels—he could smell their cheap gun oil, the stale sweat of zealots, and the sweet, sickening almond odor of the pressurized neurotoxin canister they were actively prepping for breach.
"No time to mess around with you, Cain," Logan growled through gritted, bloody teeth.
Ignoring the agony screaming through his newly healed ribs, Logan scrambled back up, sprinted across the ruined lobby, and leapt onto Marko's massive back once more before the brute could recover his footing. He locked his legs around Marko's waist and pulled the brute's heavy steel helmet back with brutal, unrelenting leverage, exposing the raw, bleeding skin where the cybernetic spikes entered his skull.
With his right hand, Logan drove his adamantium claws straight through the thick alloy housing of the primary control spike. He twisted his wrist sharply, completely shredding the internal receiver array and severing the Purifiers' remote signal.
Marko stiffened instantly, his massive frame shivering as if hit by a lightning bolt. The unnatural, milky violet glow in his eyes sputtered, flickered, and died, replaced instantly by his natural, bloodshot, and furious glare.
"What... what the hell...?" Marko grunted, stumbling forward and shaking his massive head violently like a bull clearing dust from its eyes. He reached up, feeling the shattered, sparking metal housing at the back of his neck. "My head... feels like somebody drove a railroad spike into my brain..."
"You were being controlled, Marko," Logan said, sliding off his back and landing lightly on his feet with a soft thud. "Purifiers turned you into their personal battering ram to tear down the city's defense grid."
Marko looked down at his massive, armored hands, then around at the ruined bank lobby and the dust falling from the ceiling. A deep, dangerous crimson flush swept across his heavy face, his nostrils flaring with unbridled rage. "Hodge?"
"Hodge, Reyes, and whoever else is pulling their strings," Logan said, turning away from Marko toward an open maintenance grate in the corner of the room that dropped into the pitch-black abyss of the city's subterranean transit system. "Now get out of the city before the MRD drops a tactical strike on this entire block. I've got a gas bomb to stop."
Without waiting for a reply or looking back, Logan dropped headfirst into the vertical shaft. He slid thirty feet down smooth, rust-slicked metal chutes, his boots scraping the sides to slow his descent until he slammed onto the wet, slick concrete floor of the lower transit line.
The air in the subterranean darkness was suffocatingly thick—not just with damp mold and brake dust, but with sheer, unadulterated human fear. Hundreds of mutant and human refugees—families huddled together, wounded civilians clutching improvised bandages, frightened teenagers trying to hush crying toddlers—were packed shoulder-to-shoulder against the damp, tiled tunnel walls. They were guarded only by a handful of exhausted young mutants holding flickering, glowing plasma flares that cast long, grotesque shadows against the curved ceiling.
At the far end of the subway platform, an armored Purifier containment team in heavy white tactical suits had bolted a reinforced, pressurized steel cylinder directly onto the central ventilation intake fan. A digital red LED timer on the front of the canister was rapidly ticking down from twenty seconds.
"Hostile incoming!" the Purifier squad leader screamed, spotting Logan stepping out from the dark shadows of the maintenance tunnel. "Open fire! Kill the gene-freak!"
A brutal, deafening hail of armor-piercing bullets tore through the darkness. Muzzle flashes illuminated the tunnel in violent, rhythmic strobes as heavy rounds ripped into Logan's chest, shoulders, and thighs, shredding his jacket and tearing through muscle.
Logan didn't slow down. He didn't even flinch. The white-hot, tearing pain was an old, familiar friend—a background noise in a long, violent life spent in blood, mud, and iron. His healing factor fought the incoming lead in real-time, sealing torn flesh behind the entry wounds even as he moved forward. He charged through the storm of gunfire like a wild beast, his adamantium claws flashing in the dim, crimson emergency lighting.
In less than three seconds, the gunfire stopped.
The Purifier squad lay broken across the cold subway tracks, their weapons rendered useless scraps of twisted metal, their tactical armor sliced to ribbons.
Logan stepped up to the ticking device bolted to the ventilation housing. Seven seconds remaining. Six.
He didn't know how to override a digital keypad, and he had zero interest in learning. Raising his right arm, he drove all three adamantium claws straight through the heavy steel casing and the central logic board, twisting his wrist to rip the wiring out by its roots. He severed the primary electrical fuse a microsecond before the internal spark plug could ignite the pressurized chemical payload.
The red digital timer vanished. The lethal neurotoxin hissed harmlessly into an emergency shut-off valve, venting its pressurized air into a sealed safety trap with a low, dying whistle.
Logan stood over the ruined weapon, his broad shoulders rising and falling rhythmically as he breathed heavily through his nose, air whistling through his bruised lungs. His healing factor pushed four flattened lead slugs out of his chest and abdomen, the distorted pieces of metal popping free from his skin and dropping onto the concrete floor with soft, metallic clinks.
He turned slowly to look at the crowd of refugees huddled in the dark against the platform walls.
In their wide, terrified eyes, he didn't see gratitude. He didn't see relief. He saw pure, unadulterated horror—not just of the Purifiers who had hunted them like animals, but of him. Of the dark, smoking blood dripping from his claws. Of the lethal, brutal velocity of what he was. To them, he wasn't a savior; he was just another monster operating in the dark.
Logan held their collective gaze for a long, heavy moment. He pulled his lips back over his bloody teeth, taking a quiet, steadying breath.
"Follow the tracks north," Logan growled softly, the metal claws retracting into his knuckles with a soft, double-click. "Move fast, stay together, and keep your heads down. The Professor's trying to get boats to the northern pier."
He turned away from their terrified stares, stepping alone into the dark, silent depths of the unlit tunnels to hunt down the rest of the death squads hiding in the gloom.
