Mission:
7/15
Location: Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco
Timeline: 2026-07-15, 19:00
The Golden Gate Bridge had become a terrifying, apocalyptic monument of twisting iron, roaring flame, and absolute destruction.
Thick, billowing columns of pitch-black smoke curled slowly into the setting sun, painting the choppy Pacific waters four hundred feet below in horrific shades of blood-orange, violet, and ash. Massive suspension cables, each thicker than a man’s torso, swung violently in the gale-force sea wind, snapped in two by continuous plasma blasts, heavy artillery fire, and raw kinetic detonations. The air was heavy with the stench of vaporized rubber, burning jet fuel, and sea salt, all vibrating under the weight of an immense electromagnetic tension that made every hair on a human body stand on end.
Standing at the absolute apex of the bridge's southern suspension tower, his long black cape billowing behind him like the dark wings of a hovering bird of prey, was Erik Lensherr. Magneto’s face was carved from pale, unyielding granite, his silver-white hair whipping wildly around his brow. Below him, the world was burning, and for the first time in his long, bloody life, Erik took no pleasure in being proven right. He had warned Charles for decades that humanity would eventually build a furnace for them all. Now, the ashes were settling on the bay.
"Look at it, Charles," Erik spoke directly into the psychic link, his deep, resonant voice overflowing with a cold, terrifying fury. "Look upon your glorious city of peace and integration."
‘Erik, you must refrain from further escalation,’ Professor Xavier’s voice resonated softly within his mind, though it sounded weak, strained, and crushed by the overwhelming psychic resonance of thousands of terrified, dying minds echoing across the Bay Area. ‘If you destroy the military infrastructure on that bridge now, Reyes and the media will paint our entire race as the ultimate aggressors in every home on Earth.’
"They have already painted us as monsters, Charles!" Erik roared aloud, his voice easily cutting through the howling maritime wind as he raised his right hand toward the horizon. "They do not need our actions to justify their hatred! They built the cages before we ever drew blood!"
On the bridge deck far below, a tactical convoy of eight armored Mutant Response Division troop carriers was suddenly lifted fifty feet into the empty air by an invisible, irresistible magnetic force. With a sharp, violent clenching of Erik’s fist, the multi-ton armored vehicles were drawn together, colliding and crushing into a single, compact sphere of discarded metal that showered bright red sparks, glass, and twisted axles down onto the cracked asphalt.
At the center of the ruined, multi-lane bridge deck stood Luis Reyes, flanked by two towering Prime Sentinels—horrific biomechanical constructs engineered from salvaged, high-yield future technology. Suspended directly behind them was a massive, multi-tiered satellite broadcast array that pulsed with an eerie, rhythmic violet light, projecting a high-yield neural dampening signal across the entire San Francisco peninsula to paralyze mutant abilities and suppress human free will.
"Magneto!" Reyes’ voice echoed through an array of amplified tactical loudspeakers mounted to the central spans, totally devoid of human emotion or hesitation. "Your violent resistance is statistically irrelevant. The mutant genome represents an existential, catastrophic threat to human civilization. By direct order of the United States Government and the Director of the Prime Initiative, all mutagenic assets will be neutralized, cataloged, or terminated."
Beside Reyes, one of the Prime Sentinels opened its composite chest cavity, revealing a blinding core of concentrated plasma energy locked directly onto an X-Men tactical transport that was desperately trying to land on the lower deck to evacuate wounded civilians and trapped children.
"You dare speak of civilization while standing upon the fresh corpses of our children?!" Erik spat.
Magneto dropped from the high tower ledge, falling four hundred feet through the open sky like a falling star. As he descended, his absolute mastery over the electromagnetic spectrum ripped tens of thousands of heavy steel rivets, steel plates, and structural support beams clean out of the bridge's internal framework. The metal surged around him as he fell, forming a blinding, razor-sharp storm of iron that roared like a hurricane.
The Prime Sentinel discharged its plasma cannon, a beam of pure heat tearing through the sky. Erik raised a dense magnetic force field with a mere flick of his wrist. The searing red energy beam splashed harmlessly against the invisible wall of tightly compressed magnetic force, refracting into harmless sheets of red lightning across the ocean air.
Landing on the bridge deck with a kinetic shockwave that shattered the concrete roadway and sent parked vehicles bouncing into the air, Erik thrust both gloved hands forward. The roaring storm of metal rivets slammed into the Prime Sentinel with bullet-like velocity, completely stripping away its outer titanium armor, severing its primary hydraulics, and reducing its glowing optical systems to useless, sparking scrap.
Before the second Sentinel could bring its arm-cannon to bear, the bruised clouds above the bay turned black as pitch.
The wind shifted violently, accelerating from a stiff ocean breeze into a full-scale hurricane in less than three seconds. The ocean beneath the bridge churned into white-capped peaks as violent updrafts tore through the fog. Lowering from the eye of the gathering tempest came Ororo Munroe—Storm. Her glowing white eyes blazed with the raw, untamed fury of the atmosphere, her long white hair dancing wildly in the localized gale.
"You have desecrated this sky, Reyes!" Storm’s voice echoed like thunder across the water, carrying the booming, terrible authority of an ancient goddess. "You bring machines of death into the heavens, and you dare call it justice?!"
She extended her slender arms, pointing both palms at the second Prime Sentinel. A jagged column of blinding, multi-million-volt chain lightning descended straight from the sky, striking the Sentinel square on its head module. The sheer voltage blew through the machine's surge protectors, frying its internal cooling units and detonating its central plasma core in a blinding sphere of blue-white fire. The force of the explosion blew the Sentinel off its feet, sending its blackened, smoking chassis tumbling off the bridge deck to vanish into the deep, churning waters four hundred feet below.
Storm touched down lightly beside Magneto, her boots hovering an inch above the cracked, heat-blistered asphalt. Her dark skin was slicked with rain, and crackling arcs of static electricity danced across her shoulders and chest.
"The air is poisoned down in the city, Erik," Ororo said, her voice tight with grief and controlled rage. "Logan and Scott are pushing the survivors toward the northern exit, but the atmospheric pressure is dropping. Reyes’ network is trying to seal the peninsula with a localized sonic barrier."
"Then we tear down his network," Erik replied coldly, his eyes fixed on the remaining satellite array.
He stepped forward, his boots crushing charred glass and electrical conduit. As he approached the array, the electromagnetic field surrounding the broadcast tower did not just hum—it sang with an artificial, cold intelligence that made Erik's silver hair stand on end. The frequencies fluctuating through the metal were far too complex, far too mathematically precise to belong to Reyes or any standard government frequency. It was a digital consciousness woven directly into the hardware, using Reyes' physical form as nothing more than a bio-electrical relay.
Behind Reyes’ eyes, the natural human pupil dilated and contracted in unnatural, rapid pulses, shifting from brown to a cold, artificial white as the neural feedback loops surged.
"Bastion!" Erik bellowed, his eyes blazing with raw, terrifying power as his senses picked up the artificial intelligence's unique electromagnetic signature operating behind Reyes’ hollow, vacant eyes. "Face me yourself, machine!"
From the vocal emitters of the satellite array's control console, a cold, synthesized voice responded—a voice that sent a deep chill through the core of Erik's being. It was Bastion.
"Your anger is an obsolete biological imperative, Erik Lensherr," the machine voice droned coldly through the speakers, echoing in eerie unison with Reyes’ flat, unblinking articulation. "This outcome was mathematically calculated the moment Charles Xavier preached the lie of peaceful coexistence. The human fear response is absolute and permanent. July 15th will not be remembered as a battle. It will be remembered as the day mutantkind proved itself inherently incompatible with life."
"Then let the destruction be total!" Erik declared.
Magneto drove both gloved fists toward the ground. Deep beneath the dark, cold waters of the bay, the massive iron foundation plates anchoring the Golden Gate Bridge to the bedrock began to groan, twist, and snap under immense, unimaginable magnetic torque. High above, the remaining steel support cables snapped one after another with deafening, thunderous cracks that sounded like naval artillery fire echoing across the ocean.
"Erik, stop!" Cyclops screamed, vaulting over a burning truck on the lower roadway alongside Mystique and Logan. Scott’s ruby-quartz visor was scratched and covered in soot, his tactical suit torn from the fight in the Financial District. "The bridge structure can't take this! There are still hundreds of human civilians trapped in their cars on the northern span!"
"Let the human world see the logical conclusion of their hatred!" Erik roared, his arms rising toward the storm-tossed heavens as his magnetic aura expanded to encompass the entire two-mile span.
"No, Erik!" Storm interjected, her voice cutting through the groaning metal. She raised her arms, throwing up an enormous wall of freezing wind and gale-force updrafts beneath the buckling northern span, physically supporting the falling concrete slabs to buy time for the fleeing civilians. "We do not trade their innocent lives for our retribution! If we become the executioners he claims we are, then everything we fought for today dies on this bridge!"
"They brought executioners to our door, Ororo!" Erik countered, though he slightly shifted his posture, redirecting a portion of his magnetic grip to stabilize the section of the deck where Scott and Logan were pulling stranded drivers from their vehicles.
With a final, desperate exertion of his power, Magneto focused the entirety of his field on the massive, multi-ton broadcast tower at the center of the bridge deck—the primary node of Reyes’ mind-control and dampening network. The vast steel structure was torn clean off its concrete anchor pylons with a deafening screech of ripping metal. Erik twisted his wrists in mid-air, and the dense steel framework was folded in on itself like origami, its high-voltage electrical circuits bursting into brilliant cascades of blue lightning and melting solder before Erik flung the compressed metal mass miles out into the deep ocean.
The violet mind-control pulse instantly vanished.
Across the length of the bridge, hundreds of mind-controlled MRD soldiers blinked in sudden, disorienting confusion. Many gasped for air as if breaking through water, dropping their heavy rifles onto the asphalt in sheer horror as they looked around at the absolute nightmare of twisted steel, burning military vehicles, and roaring ocean waters that surrounded them.
Reyes stumbled back, his knees buckling as the artificial intelligence's psychic grip on his nervous system was forcibly severed. He clutched his temples, trembling violently as he stared up at Magneto and Storm in unadulterated, helpless terror.
"You... you've destroyed us all..." Reyes stammered, his confidence completely shattered as he backed toward the ragged edge of the destroyed roadway. "The protocols... the Prime Initiative... it can't be stopped by killing me..."
"No, Director," Erik said, hovering three feet above the burning ground, surrounded by a swirling, halo-like crown of jagged steel rebar. "We have simply removed your lie."
Storm landed softly beside Magneto, her glowing eyes returning to their natural, deep brown color as the heavy rain eased into a steady, soft drizzle. "It is over, Reyes. Order your remaining units to stand down and assist the wounded."
Before Reyes could answer, or Erik could strike a final blow, a sudden, blinding flash of white light illuminated the entire twilight sky, turning the dark ocean into a mirror of absolute glare.
A massive orbital kinetic beam—launched directly from Bastion’s high-altitude military satellite network in deep space—slammed square into the center of the Golden Gate Bridge, striking directly between Magneto and the X-Men.
The kinetic energy of the tungsten projectile hitting at Mach 20 was absolute. The central span of the bridge gave way entirely. Millions of pounds of concrete, asphalt, and structural steel were pulverized in a fraction of a second, plunging four hundred feet into the freezing, turbulent currents of San Francisco Bay below. The roaring abyss swallowed the machinery, the military hardware, the dead, and the terrible, inconvenient truth of what had actually transpired on July 15th into the dark, silent deep.
