Mission: 7/15
Location: Chinatown, San Francisco
Timeline: 2026-07-15, 14:30

Chinatown was an escalating labyrinth of thick grey smoke, flickering neon signs, and screaming, running crowds. The familiar scent of roasting tea, sweet pastries, and dim sum had been completely replaced by the acrid, metallic stench of tear gas, burning rubber, and copper. High above the asphalt, paper lanterns swayed wildly in the hot updrafts carrying ash from Civic Center Plaza, their bright crimson silk scorched black by drift-fire.

Raven Darkhölme stood motionless atop a three-story wrought-iron fire escape overlooking Grant Avenue, her slitted yellow eyes methodically scanning the chaotic streets below. Her breathing was steady, slow, and disciplined—a stark contrast to the sheer, hysterical terror vibrating through the concrete. In a fraction of a second, her smooth blue skin rippled like liquid ink, her physical structure shifting seamlessly into the tactical fatigues, helmet, and reinforced body armor of a high-ranking Mutant Response Division officer.

Mystique had never shared Charles Xavier’s soft, starry-eyed idealism, nor had she ever bought into the hollow, performative speeches of politicians like Luis Reyes. She had known with absolute, chilling certainty that this day would end in blood the second Charles and Erik foolishly agreed to share a public platform in front of human television cameras. Peace was an illusion sold to the weak to keep them placid until the slaughter began.

Down on the narrow street below, a heavily armed squad of Purifiers was actively driving a cornered group of human and mutant civilians into a dead-end alleyway between two brick storefronts. The zealots moved with terrifying precision, their white-and-red tactical vests gleaming beneath the flickering signs of an abandoned herbalist shop.

"Move it! On your knees! Face the wall! Hands behind your heads!" the Purifier squad leader barked, raising his heavy tactical assault rifle. The weapon was retrofitted with an under-barrel nullification emitter that hummed with a sickly blue light. "MRD field protocols designate this entire grid as an active hostile zone! Clear them out! Leave no gene-freaks standing!"

"We aren't hostiles! Please! We were just trying to get away from the plaza!" a young mother pleaded, her voice breaking into hysterical sobs as she pulled her small, terrified son behind her coat. Beside her, an elderly man with faint metallic scales along his jawline trembled, pressing his forehead against the cold, damp brick.

Mystique didn't bother wasting breath on words.

She dropped from the third-story railing without making a sound, landing lightly on the hood of a parked delivery van before vaulting forward into a fluid sweep-kick. The steel-toed boot caught the squad leader directly across the side of his helmet with bone-shattering force, snapping his neck back and sending him crashing face-first to the asphalt. Before the second Purifier could swing his barrel round, Mystique drew twin suppressed handguns from her side holsters, firing two precise, lethal rounds into the unarmored neck-joints of his tactical suit.

The remaining two guards panicked, raising their rifles, but Mystique was already a blur of lethal motion. She grabbed the barrel of the third Purifier's gun, driving her elbow into his windpipe before using his falling body as a human shield against a spray of bullets from the fourth. With a quick flick of her wrist, she put a single bullet through the last Purifier’s visor.

Silence fell over the alley, broken only by the steady dripping of a broken rain gutter and the ragged breathing of the survivors.

"Get up and run," Mystique said, her voice dropping into a cold, raspy whisper that cut through the terror. "Head toward the docks on the northern wharf. Stay off the main avenues, stay in the shadows, and do not look back."

The civilians didn't hesitate. They scrambled frantically over the bodies of the fallen Purifiers and vanished into the fog-shrouded alleyways of the district.

A tall shadow detached itself from the doorway of a darkened apothecary across the street. Gambit stepped out into the dim light of a flickering streetlamp, his long brown trench coat swaying gently in the damp breeze as he adjusted his fingerless leather gloves. In his right hand, a deck of playing cards glowed with a faint, dangerous magenta energy that hummed softly in the quiet street.

"Always did like a woman who knows how to make an entrance, petite," Remy LeBeau murmured, his thick Cajun drawl remarkably relaxed despite the distant artillery explosions rocking the city's financial district. "Though I reckon you missed the sniper sitting on the roof two doors down."

Mystique didn't even bother to turn around as a red laser sight painted a bright target over her stolen tactical vest. Instead, she unclipped a small, disc-shaped EMP jammer from her belt and flicked it casually over her shoulder without looking. The device detonated in mid-air with a sharp blue flash, instantly frying the sniper's thermal scope and weapon electronics. A second later, Gambit flicked a single glowing card skyward with a snap of his wrist. The card sailed thirty feet into the air and struck the rooftop ledge, exploding in a bright burst of kinetic force that threw the sniper off the roof, sending him crashing onto a canvas awning below.

"What is the current status of the Brotherhood's emergency communications?" Mystique asked, stepping over the unconscious Purifier leader to retrieve an encrypted military radio drive from his belt.

"Completely fried," Gambit said, leaning his heavy steel bo staff against his shoulder as he watched the perimeter. "Reyes locked down the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate ten minutes after the initial blast at Civic Center. The MRD isn't just arresting protesters, Raven. They're sweeping up every man, woman, and child with a detected X-Gene and tossing 'em into unmarked steel transport trucks. Word on the street is they’re redirecting the trucks underground—straight into the old abandoned transit tunnels beneath Chinatown."

Mystique connected the stolen radio drive into a handheld electronic datapad, her blue fingers moving across the interface with lightning speed as streams of encrypted code scrolled across the dim screen.

"Hodge is a fanatic, but he isn't a master strategist," Mystique said, her jaw tightening as she decoded the tactical dispatches. "A religious terrorist doesn't possess the military infrastructure required to coordinate a systematic, city-wide abduction operation without high-level government clearance. Reyes is feeding him the tracking data directly from the city's municipal grid."

"And the facility?" Gambit asked, his eyes darkening as the casual smirk faded from his face.

"You said your contacts in the Thieves Guild found the entry point to the underground Synergy lab?"

"Yeah. Down through the old storm drains near the tea warehouse," Remy replied, his usual charming demeanor vanishing completely. "They've got heavy power dampening fields running down there—military-grade stuff. Once they drag our people below street level, their powers go dark. Nobody hears 'em scream, Raven. They aren't just holding 'em down there. They're harvesting them. Draining their genes to power Hodge's armor and those damn Sentinels."

Mystique’s yellow eyes narrowed into slitted points of pure, concentrated hatred. "Erik wants to tear Hodge apart on live television to prove a point, and Charles is still trying to negotiate with military command while his students are being shoved into cattle cars. If mutantkind is going to survive this night, we have to destroy their extraction infrastructure from the inside out."

She tapped her datapad, overriding the Purifiers' localized radio frequency with a forced override code. The small speaker crackled instantly with panicked, chaotic static and shouting field officers.

"--All units, we have heavy tactical resistance in Sector 4! The big one in the steel suit is ripping through our reinforced barricades--"

"--Repeat, Juggernaut is uncontained! He’s breaking through the Financial District toward the lower transit lines--"

"--Where are those reinforcements?! The tunnel teams are being breached!--"

Mystique snapped the datapad shut and looked directly at Gambit. Her liquid form shifted fluidly once more, abandoning the MRD uniform to take on the appearance of a high-ranking Purifier commander, complete with bloodstained armor and a custom tactical helmet.

"Piotr and a group of X-Men refugees are trapped in the subterranean transit hubs directly beneath the plaza," Mystique said coldly. "If Hodge’s containment teams seal those heavy blast doors, hundreds of our people will be trapped in the dark and gassed. We are going down there."

"Just you and me against an army of armed zealots in a dark hole?" Gambit grinned, though his red-and-black eyes remained deadly serious as he shuffled his glowing deck of cards. "Sounds like a Tuesday in New Orleans."

"No heroics, Remy," Mystique warned, pulling two fresh magazines from her vest and slamming them into her sidearms with a sharp metallic click. "We disable their jammers, we blow the tunnel bulkheads, and we execute anyone standing between us and the extraction point. We leave no witnesses."

Without another word, the shape-shifter and the thief melted into the dark stairwell leading beneath the streets of Chinatown. They descended into the damp, echoing underbelly of San Francisco, leaving the burning buildings and screaming streets behind as they stepped into the pitch-black abyss below.

The air grew rapidly colder as they navigated the spiral iron staircase, descending forty feet past leaking water mains and ancient brick foundations dating back to the turn of the century. The roaring din of the surface faded into a rhythmic, terrifying rumble—the rhythmic pulse of heavy machinery running deep beneath the earth.

"Hold up," Gambit whispered, holding out an arm. He gestured toward a junction fifty feet ahead where thick, freshly laid industrial power cables snaked along the wet concrete floor, glowing with a faint blue aura. "That ain't city wiring. That's power dampening conduit. Step across that without cutting the feed, and your blood's gonna feel like slush."

Mystique pulled a monomolecular blade from her boot, crouching beside the thick conduit. "Can you overload it?"

"Overload it?" Gambit smirked, pulling three glowing cards from his sleeve. "Darlin', I'm gonna make it sing."

With a flick of his wrist, Gambit wedged the kinetic cards beneath the primary junction box. Mystique grabbed his collar, pulling him back into a recessed alcove a second before the charges detonated. A brilliant flash of magenta light lit up the wet brickwork, followed by the deep, shuddering sound of high-voltage transformers popping in sequence down the tunnel line.

Down the shaft, electric lights flickered and died, plunging the facility ahead into the eerie crimson glow of emergency backup power. Panicked shouts in plain clothes and military dialect immediately echoed through the subterranean corridors.

"Power's down on the sub-level! Get the backup generators online! Secure the test subjects!"

"That's our cue," Mystique said, her eyes burning like twin flares in the dark as she drew her pistols. "Time to clean house."
