The sun over San Francisco was bright, unyielding, and deceptively warm. From his vantage point on an elevated marble dais near the center of Civic Center Plaza, Scott Summers adjusted his ruby-quartz visor with a single gloved finger, tuning out the soft hum of the city traffic that hovered just beyond the perimeter. Below him, a vast ocean of humanity—and mutantkind—stretched across the park grounds all the way to the pristine stone steps of City Hall. Thousands had gathered under the crisp, clear California sky. Banners of silk, canvas, and digital light fluttered rhythmically in the ocean breeze, bearing slogans calling for peace, constitutional protection, integration, and the memory of a fragile unity that had taken decades of blood and political maneuvering to assemble.
It was supposed to be a historic turning point. The Mutant Response Division’s Chief, Luis Reyes, had stood at the podium only twenty minutes prior, preaching co-existence and civil cooperation alongside local leaders, human rights attorneys, and community organizers. The atmosphere had been electric, charged with a tentative, almost fragile hope that Scott had secretly dared to believe in, if only for a brief, shining moment. The world seemed ready to listen.
Then, the fragile peace shattered into chaos.
It didn't begin with a grand declaration of war or the iconic, metallic roar of an approaching Sentinel. It began with gunshots—sharp, echoing cracks that ricocheted through the dense treeline bordering the eastern edge of the park.
"Hands up! Keep your hands where we can see them! All mutants submit to screening!" a voice bellowed through an amplified, crackling megaphone, its harsh sound instantly swallowed by the sudden collective gasp of the peaceful crowd.
Scott’s head snapped toward the eastern perimeter near the tree-lined walkways. Clad in heavy tactical body armor emblazoned with crimson crosshairs, heavily armed men surged from hidden black transport vans parked along the plaza's edge. Cameron Hodge’s Purifiers had arrived.
"Tactical alert," Scott said into his comm-link, his voice dropping instantly into the sharp, practiced cadence of an experienced battlefield commander. "All X-Men units, secure the perimeter immediately. Purifiers are advancing on the eastern flank. Maintain defensive lines. Do not, under any circumstances, let them push into the civilian crowd."
Before his team could fully deploy, the horror escalated from an armed insurgency into absolute, unbridled madness.
The Purifiers weren't just firing live rounds into the air to disperse the gathering; they came equipped with experimental sonic triggers and high-frequency latent X-Gene activation disrupters. Across the wide plaza, terrified teenagers and young adults suddenly clutched their heads, screaming in sudden, agonizing pain as disorienting electromagnetic waves swept across the grounds. Suppressed, dormant mutant genes snapped awake all at once in dozens of peaceful attendees who had no prior knowledge of their latent gifts.
A young man near the central fountain suddenly erupted into an uncontrollable, outward blast of raw kinetic force. The sudden pressure wave shattered the thick granite basin into thousands of flying shards and threw dozens of innocent onlookers off their feet like ragdolls. A teenage girl nearby shrieked in terror as her entire body burst into intense, uncontrollable plasma fire, igniting the surrounding dry grass and sending a towering plume of thick, acrid black smoke straight into the pristine blue sky.
Panic instantly consumed the plaza like wildfire in a drought.
"Help us! The mutants are attacking!" someone screamed from the thick of the crowd, their voice shrill with raw terror.
"They're firing at us! Return fire!" another shouted, pointing wildly at the blinding flashes of light exploding behind the treeline—flashes that were a tragic, indistinguishable mix of Purifier heavy weapons fire and panicked, newly awakened mutants instinctively lashing out to defend their lives.
Scott vaulted off the marble dais, his boots hitting the pavement hard as he hit the ground running. "Jean, Hank, clear a civilian evacuation corridor toward Van Ness Avenue immediately! Logan, keep those Purifiers off the main plaza at all costs!"
"Scott, look up! Above the south rise!" Jean’s frantic voice cracked across their psychic link, laced with a rare, suffocating note of pure alarm.
Scott tilted his head skyward, his hand flying to the side control of his visor. Hovering directly above the treeline was a hijacked Mutant Response Division gunship, its heavy undercarriage weapons array glowing with a sickening crimson light. It wasn't targeting armed combatants; the turrets were locked directly onto a crowded picnic lawn on the park’s south rise, where ordinary families had gathered on blankets with picnic baskets and lawn chairs to enjoy the afternoon sun.
On that grassy rise, Jace Turner had been sitting beside his wife, Paula, quietly watching their young daughter, Grace, run through the grass with a colorful plastic windmill toy. When the sudden sonic pulses had rattled the square and gunshots echoed through the trees, Jace had instinctively stood up, pulling Paula to her feet.
"Jace, what's happening?!" Paula had screamed, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror as waves of screaming people began stampeding around them.
"Stay down! Get Grace! Get under the bench!" Jace yelled, turning back toward his daughter.
High above them, the Purifier pilot, blinded by sudden electrical interference from a nearby mutant's power spike, locked onto a cluster of newly awakened teenagers near the treeline and opened fire with a high-yield plasma mortar. The shot detonated prematurely in mid-air, catching a rogue kinetic energy burst launched by a panicked civilian in the crowd below.
A massive, swirling sphere of brilliant, unstable red energy split off from the mid-air blast, stabilized for a terrifying fraction of a second in the air, and plummeted straight toward the south rise park.
Scott saw the catastrophe unfolding in agonizing slow motion. "No!" he roared, driving his visor control knob down and discharging a massive, wide-beam optic blast upward to intercept the falling sphere. The ruby beam slammed directly into the cascade of swirling plasma, trying with all its kinetic force to push the energy away from the ground. But the plasma mass was too dense, its downward trajectory too absolute.
The sphere hit the lawn with catastrophic force.
A blinding shockwave of heat, dust, and raw kinetic energy ripped through the picnic area. Old-growth oak trees were snapped like toothpicks, and the air was instantly sucked clean of oxygen. Jace Turner was thrown violently backward onto his spine, the wind ripped from his lungs as Paula was tossed beside him into the churned, burning earth.
Gasping for air, his vision swimming in disorienting shades of red, white, and grey ash, Jace dragged himself up through the thick, choking smoke. "Grace! Grace!"
A few yards away, buried beneath the scorched, metallic debris of a crushed picnic table and smoldering grass, lay the small, motionless form of his daughter. The colorful plastic toy lay snapped and melting in the dirt beside her pale, outstretched hand.
Jace let out an agonizing, guttural scream that tore through his throat, collapsing over her lifeless body as the sky above continued to burn. In his shattered mind, in that single harrowing second of absolute grief, the complex, nuanced reality of what had transpired—the Purifiers' sabotage, the weapon disrupters, the crossfire—vanished entirely. All his senses recorded was the swirling crimson energy blast from the sky, the terrifying flashes of mutant power behind the trees, and the total, unforgivable destruction of his family.
Scott reached the edge of the smoking crater seconds later, his heavy combat boots crunching on scorched earth and broken rock. His chest heaved as he stared down at the devastation. The sight of Jace holding his daughter's body hit Scott like a physical strike to the chest, momentarily paralyzing his tactical mind.
"I... I tried to hit it... I tried to push it away," Scott whispered, his voice trembling beneath the leather of his cowl, though no one could hear him over the deafening, chaotic din of war.
"Summers! Pull it together right now!" Logan’s gruff, unmistakable roar bellowed from the left as the Wolverine slammed an armored Purifier soldier into the dirt, popping his adamantium claws with a lethal metallic snikt. "We've got heavy power armor moving in from the north quadrant! Hodge is on the field!"
Scott swallowed the bitter taste of bile and grief, forcing his rigid soldier’s discipline to override the overwhelming horror clawing at his mind. He turned back toward the north side of Civic Center Plaza.
Stepping out from behind a line of burning transport vehicles came Cameron Hodge, fully encased in a towering, ten-foot-tall suit of mechanical power armor painted in pristine white and silver. The suit hummed with the sickening blue light of stolen mutant energy dampeners, its arm cannons humming as they charged with deadly nullification ordnance. Surrounding Hodge were dozens of Purifiers armed with military-grade assault rifles, systematically herding fleeing civilians into bottlenecks while executing any mutant who displayed the slightest sign of an active power.
"Look at them, my brothers and sisters!" Hodge’s digitally amplified voice boomed across the plaza's emergency loudspeakers, cold, resonant, and dripping with religious zealotry. "The abominations have finally shown their true, filthy face! They turn your peaceful gathering into a slaughterhouse! San Francisco will be their sanctuary no longer! It will be their mass grave!"
"X-Men! Form on me!" Scott shouted, adjusting his visor setting to a concentrated, narrow beam. "Stop those Purifiers from advancing on the crowd! Protect the civilians at all costs!"
Scott unleashed a concentrated, continuous beam of pure ruby optic force, striking Hodge’s armor square in the central breastplate. The sheer kinetic momentum sent the towering mechanical suit stumbling backward three steps, bright sparks showering into the air as the reinforced alloy buckled. Hodge laughed—a harsh, synthesized sound that rattled through the plaza—and returned fire with a twin-linked plasma cannon that tore through the historic marble steps of City Hall, throwing stone and fire into the air.
Around Scott, the entire plaza had devolved into a terrifying portrait of hell on earth. What had begun as a rally for hope and peaceful coexistence was now a chaotic war zone of screaming crowds, exploding vehicles, unchecked mutant powers, and ruthless military death squads. The thick black smoke rose steadily into the clear California sky, slowly blotting out the midday sun and obscuring the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance—a grim sign that the world they had spent years trying to build had ended, and the slaughter had only just begun.
Scott pushed forward through the fire and debris, firing beam after beam to cover the retreating civilians. He knew that regardless of who had fired the first shot, the public would only remember the fire, the bodies, and the terrifying display of power. The spark had been lit, and it threatened to burn down everything they loved.
