Alkali Lake

Nestled deep within the Canadian wilderness beneath the waters of Alkali Lake, the restored Alkali Lake Industrial Complex stands as a silent monument to mutant history, technological ingenuity, and covert survival.Originally constructed as a classified military research installation under Major William Stryker, the subterranean facility bore witness to pivotal genetic turning points, from the tragic origins of the Weapon X program to the destructive dam collapse that nearly claimed the X-Men. Following years of abandonment and submersed ruin, the complex was quietly acquired and rebuilt by the Xavier Corporation under the guidance of Dr. Moira MacTaggert.
Today, fully retrofitted with advanced infrastructure, independent power systems, and specialized tactical sectors, Alkali Lake operates as an off-grid sanctuary and primary contingency headquarters—providing a hidden haven for mutantkind in an increasingly unpredictable world.
History
United States Government & Secret Research
In 1973, Major William Stryker established a covert military outpost at the Alkali Lake Government research into mutant genetics began during World War II under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, when early Super-Soldier testing led to the capture and experimentation on mutant test subjects like James Howlett. In 1943, Canadian military researchers attempted early Super-Soldier experiments on Howlett, inadvertently accelerating latent mutant gene triggers globally. Following the war in 1945, Weapon X researchers attempted to reverse-engineer Erskine’s serum using Howlett’s DNA, further driving mutant genetic distribution across the globe. By 1958, invasive military experiments were conducted on a young Erik Lensherr to measure his magnetic limits, culminating in a facility-destroying escape that freed Howlett into the wilderness before Howlett eventually joined Task Force X under Major William Stryker.By 1973, Major Stryker had expanded these military research initiatives and established a covert outpost at the Alkali Lake Industrial Complex, subjecting Logan to the Weapon X Project and bonding adamantium to his skeleton before Logan rampaged through the facility and escaped into the wild. Following the site's initial abandonment, government contractors like the Essex Corporation retrieved biological samples from the complex. In 1979, Stryker operated Three Mile Island to harvest mutant DNA for Weapon XI before wiping Logan's memories with adamantium ammunition.
Decades later in 2014, Colonel Stryker reactivated the Alkali Lake facility, using mind-controlling fluid from his son Jason to capture Cyclops and Charles Xavier to operate a replica "Dark Cerebro" to telepathically wipe out all mutants worldwide. The X-Men joined forces with Magneto and Mystique to infiltrate the complex; Nightcrawler freed Xavier while Magneto rewired the machine to target humans before fleeing. During the battle, Cyclops damaged the dam structure, forcing Jean Grey to use her telekinetic abilities to hold back the floodwaters so the X-Jet could escape, sacrificing her physical body as Stryker was killed and the facility was submerged.
The Xavier Corporation
The ruined site lay submerged until 2016, when Scott Summers tracked residual energy signatures to Alkali Lake and witnessed Jean Grey’s physical rebirth from the water, triggering a massive psychic explosion that placed Scott in a deep coma. Following the eventual resolution of the Phoenix crisis and Xavier's consciousness surviving in his comatose twin brother's body, the Xavier Corporation secretly acquired the property. Under the direction of Dr. Moira MacTaggert and supported by technology designed by Forge, the Alkali Lake Industrial Complex was completely restored and rebuilt. Modernized to serve as a contingency base for the X-Men, the complex was equipped with advanced infrastructure including dormitories, a specialized medical center, a state-of-the-art Danger Room, a rebuilt Cerebro Chamber, and an independent reactor.Following the mass disappearance of mutant teams during the July 2026 San Francisco Crisis, the restored Alkali Lake facility remains a hidden, fully operational haven.
Layout
Located beneath the dam at Alkali Lake, the restored Alkali Lake Industrial Complex is an expansive, multilevel, star-shaped facility situated partially underneath the lake itself, with entry provided through a large main spillway controlled from the central bridge. The spillway opens into a vast Hangar housing aircraft and ground transport vehicles, while adjacent Storage Facilities utilize automated stack-and-retrieval systems alongside nearby locker rooms for gear deployment. At the core of the complex lies an open-air chamber designed as a Hydroponics Farm and Arboretum, utilizing advanced agricultural techniques and botanical species to provide fresh food that offsets replicator power demands while continuously scrubbing the internal subterranean atmosphere. Surrounding this core, the Accommodation Block houses base personnel and long-term residents with double-occupant dormitories, staff quarters, an automated laundry facility, a gymnasium, and a central cafeteria. Adjacent to the accommodation sector is the Danger Room, a spherical training chamber equipped with advanced holographic projection and force-field technology that simulates diverse environmental variables and combat scenarios.
The Administrative Block serves as the central command nexus, centering around the War Room for security, sensor data, and mission logistics coordination, alongside briefing rooms, executive offices, a Security Center, and a high-security stockade with specialized containment cells. Positioned between the Administrative and Science Blocks is the Cerebro Chamber. Built by William Stryker using the data stolen from the X-Mansion's computer, the restored replica of the spherical telepathic amplifier magnifies a telepath's abilities across interior projection walls.
The Science Block incorporates salvaged laboratories alongside modern research facilities, housing dedicated Science Labs, general research modules, and a Hospital equipped with diagnostic beds, bio-containment units, and medical scanning suites. Finally, on the lowest subterranean levels accessible via the Hangar, the Maintenance Block houses the facility's primary Power Generator — a hybrid reactor matrix combining hydroelectric generation with high-output plasma towers — and surrounding workshops that process raw materials into equipment necessary to maintain the facility.
