Born in Yorkshire, England, Leilani Smythe grew up exploring the rugged moors and countryside, developing an early knack for land navigation, orienteering, and tracking. Her primary mutation manifested during her early teenage years on a mountain expedition in the Scottish Highlands, where she realized she could mentally map complex physical architecture and terrain in her mind's eye. Shortly after, her spatial awareness triggered her ability to fold space itself, allowing her to tear open instantaneous gateways through thin air. This potent combination enabled her to chart dense forests, subterranean complexes, and urban grids with remarkable precision, stepping through portals to bypass physical obstacles completely.
As anti-mutant rhetoric escalated during the 2010s, Leilani kept her abilities discreet, working as an elite search-and-rescue operative and covert extraction specialist across Europe. Her non-mutant survival skills, environmental awareness, and talent for opening escape routes in catastrophic environments drew the attention of regional defense intelligence, but her fierce independence kept her operating off the official grid. During a covert field operation following the Blip Restoration, she crossed paths with William "Liam" Teagarden. The two forged an immediate, unbreakable connection built on shared values, quick wit, and deep mutual respect, quickly becoming partners both in the field and in life.
When rising threats from the Mutant Response Division (MRD) and Sentinel Services forced non-combatant and covert mutants underground, Leilani relocated across the Atlantic and brought her expertise to Project eXcelsior. Operating under the callsign "Janus," she functions as the squad's premier Scout and insertion specialist. Classified with Level 3 spatial biokinesis and spatial manipulation, her spatial mapping charts the physical layout of an area and structural movement within it, requiring her own tactical judgment to identify targets rather than automatically revealing identities through solid walls. Opening portals requires line-of-sight or a precise mental picture of her destination; while short-range tactical jumps are fluid, opening wider gateways, sustaining them for prolonged periods, or transporting multiple personnel incurs significant physical fatigue. Balancing her raw power with hard-earned field tradecraft, Janus ensures her team—and Liam—always have a clear path home. |
